* US Congress had convened with both Democrats and Republicans in a mood to authorise any necessary steps to meet the Russian challenge of scientific and military superiority, whatever the cost. Both houses agreed to give priority to a request from President Eisenhower for an additional $US1260 million to speed up US missile development and air defence. The speaker of the House of Representatives, Sam Rayburn, voiced the mood of most members when he announced he favoured appropriating whatever money was available for defence.

* The new Spit bridge was expected to be completed by the end of the year, despite delays in construction. Planners expected the new bridge to relieve traffic congestion and speed up the travel time for cars driving to Sydney from the Northern Beaches.

* New Zealand explorer Sir Edmund Hillary announced he would help the Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition leader, Sir Vivian Fuchs, who was attempting to cross Antarctica. Speaking from Antarctica by radio phone from a position near the South Pole, Hillary said he would meet Fuchs, who was approaching the Pole from the Weddell Sea, at Depot 700 and guide him to the Pole.

* Brisbane local government aldermen planned to transfer water to the South Coast district because the region only had a fortnight's worth of water left in its reservoirs. South Coast residents were to go without water overnight while their supplies were shut down as part of a plan to save water.
